Introducing Magdalena Arantzazu aka Mawiggy a multidisciplinary artist from Montevideo

(n. 1993 Uruguay) es una artista multidisciplinaria que vive en Montevideo. Licenciada en Diseño Textil / FADU - CDI 2016 /, su formación es diversa, en 2017 toma contacto por primera vez con la fotografía analógica, herramienta que le permitirá retratar y perpetuar imágenes en forma de ideas conceptuales, campañas comerciales, imagen de identidad o las infinitas posibilidades. Le desafía encontrar narrativas visuales, estilista y diseñadora de vestuario por vocación.
Su formación en Bellas Artes 2015, más su inclinación estética generan que sus trabajos se identifiquen por responder a un mismo universo.
So, how did you discover an interest in photography? Tell us about your creative and cultural background and story as a visual creator?
Antes de descubrir la fotografía ya había investigado desde mi niñez diferentes formas de expresar mi creatividad y de canalizar sobre todo las ganas de crear algo, algo que salga de mi. Antes que la fotografía nació mi interés en explorar diferentes formatos donde la materialidad y la investigación forman parte de ese proceso creativo. Para mí la fotografía consciente nació después de haber investigado otras técnicas y el diseño, nació como excusa de perpetuar ideas, cosas o vestuarios o estilismos, continue investigando este medio y tomo lugar como forma de expresión más inmediata, investigue diferentes formatos sobre todo el analógico, lo que más me gusta de la fotografía es crear el relato visual y como se vincula con el universo conceptual o el discurso.
Before discovering photography, I’ve been expressing my creativity and channeling new ways of creating, since I was a child. In those early ages, different materials and textures, caught my attention, to the point of exploring deeper and deeper into the creative process. So for me, photography was born after I was able to explore within art and design, it was an excuse for perpetuate ideas, objects, clothes. Then it just kept evolving as a technique, and as a way of expression.
I’ve been playing with different formats, especially analog. I’ve been also playing with the light, and ways of shading light. But the thing I love the most, is to be able to create this visual stories and the conceptual universe. As a female photographer, I’m still defining myself and my non-stop evolving process. It’s a constant quest towards nowhere in particular, and I’m actually figuring it out as I’m doing it.
How did your path change this past year? Professionally and personally?
El último año fue decisivo como proceso evolutivo de mi persona, volví a lo es encima por un momento en los meses de cuarentena, volví q conectarme con mi familia y con la raíz, traté de pensar con claridad y alejar mis sombras y miedos, porque como todos sabemos el sector artístico en el tercer mundo puede ser muy difícil. Pero después de pasar oscuridad logré centrarme y pensar en positivo, fortalecí mis vínculos paterno y materno, base esencial de la evolución a mi parecer, como ser humano, el sanar los vínculos.
Last year was a still point in my life, but the creative process never actually stops. I focused on connecting, mostly with my family, with my roots. I tried to think clearly and let go of my shadows and fears because it can get a bit tough for artists in general, but especially in South America. But once the darkness wore off, I was determined to focus and think positive, so I could really strengthen my bonds, both motherly and fatherly, which is the base for evolution, I believe, healing bonds.
Tell us more about yourself and this project, what was the main source of inspiration for it?
Este proyecto tomó lugar en mis vacaciones de verano, fue tomar la vía rápida y buscar los recursos en el lugar, la inspiración principal fueron las grutas de punta ballena, el lugar me inspiró a crear un personaje que cohabitara en el y generara cierta intriga y aire místico.
This project, in particular, took place during my summer holidays, using what I had handy, so the main inspiration for it was the place itself, Punta Ballena, which prompted me to create a character to coexisted in it, generating some intrigue and mystical air.
What are your most characteristic traits and how does it come to expression in your creative process?
Tienden a influenciarme mis sentimientos en los procesos creativos, soy una persona muy emotiva y por momentos viseral. El mundo material y el mundo espiritual están en constante puje en mis piezas, algunas veces me dejo llevar por lo estético pero normalmente mis estados de ánimos influyen en la forma en que me expreso y son una de las principales fuentes de inspiración, me inspira transgredir, buscar formas de trascender planos no solo en la fotografía sino también en mi vida personal. Me preocupo por el mensaje, y lo que estoy comunicando, Soy consciente que la generación de imágenes es generación de cultura y valores, por eso apuntó a perfilarme cada vez más por personas no normativas y diversas. Es un trabajo de de construcción que todavía estoy atravesando y explorando, me emociona la búsqueda.
I’m actually very emotional, so my feeling are a huge part of my process. Material and spiritual worlds are always merging and dissolving in my work. Sometimes I can get a bit more carried away by the aesthetics, but usually the way I’m feeling influences directly the way I express myself, and is one of the main sources of inspiration. It inspires me to transgress, to look for ways to transcend planes not only in photography but also in my personal life.
What are your main impulses to take photos? Have you ever got inspiration from some unexpected places and what are they if so?
Lgusta crear universos y personajes, o situaciones oníricas, explorar el cuerpo y el espacio, el desnudo ha sido unas de mis últimas aficiones y donde me he volcado a explorar en el último tiempo.
I really enjoy bringing life to characters, universes, or oneiric situations, exploring the body and soul, space. Nudity is one of the latest concepts that I’ve been exploring.
What concepts will you be exploring through your work next?
Para mi siguiente proyecto estoy trabajando en la caracterización de 3 personajes donde la interpretación de sus características y cuerpxs tienen que ver con un discurso previamente situado. continuó explorando en la creación de personajes ficticios sin perder el link con la realidad. Seguimos en la tercera dimensión pero me gusta crear personajes que pueden ser reales en otra dimensión, como los reptilianos, que si bien son una teoría consparanoica tienen una relación del estilo black mirror con la sociedad real y las jerarquías de poder.
For my next project, I’m working on the characterization of three main fictional characters. They are set in the 3rd dimension but I do like to play with the idea of making it possible for the to exist in other dimensions, like reptilians, who although are part of a conspirator theory, I’m still interested in this dynamics black mirror styled, where society and hierarchies of power enter the chat for discussion.
Who are your heroes? Who’s been the most inspiring for you lately?
Me inspiran escenarios de la vida real, mis viajes, mis amigues, me inspiro de mis sueños y de toda la Internet, personas q sigo: Kenny lemes , Petra Collins, Ren hang, ms nina, Grimes bjork.
I’m inspired by real-life scenarios, my trips, my friends, my dreams and the internet as a whole. People I look up to: Kenny Lemes , Petra Collins, Ren Hang, Ms Nina, Grimes, Bjork.
Which artists, designers or photographers would you like to collaborate with?
Me encantaría colaborar con artistas digitales y artistas 3d llevar mi universo creativo a otros lenguajes, mezclándolo con las inquietudes de otros artistas, en un futuro idóneo y dándole lugar a la fantasía me gustaría colaborar con: naomi gilon, esmay wagemans, kali uchis y ARCA y muchos artistes más.
I would love to collaborate with digital artists that can take develop my universe and translate it to other languages, along with the concerns of other artists. In this ideal world, I’d be thrilled to work with Naomi Gilon, Esmay Wagemans, Kali Uchis and ARCA, just to name a few.

la búsqueda de mi identidad es igual de importante cómo la búsqueda del propósito como colectivo y en otros niveles como especie. No contemplo mi evolución como hecho aislado y creo en la colectividad y la construcción de un futuro idóneo hacia la aceptación de las diversidades, hacia la justicia social y la no-violencia en cualquiera de sus expresiones.
This quest for my personal identity is for me, as important as the quest for a collective purpose. I’m not isolated, and I strongly believe in collectivity and connectivity. I work everyday and hope for a future where all identities are accepted, social justice is a thing, and violence it’s just not a thing anymore.
